It seemed a celebratory moment Saturday night for author and former Santa Rosan Angie Chau. Friends, parents and at least one former teacher gathered with others at Copperfield’s Books in Montgomery Village to hear her read one of her short stories and to applaud her first book: “Quiet As They Come.”

I liked what the Santa Rosa High School grad said about her decision to write. She was working in San Francisco’s Financial District and realized she wanted to do more in life than “help the rich get richer.” She wanted to write, and she used her relatives as inspiration for stories about what it was like to be an immigrant from Vietnam to America. I doubt she knew then that it would take 10 years to complete the book.

Selling books doesn’t seem an easy task. I’m grateful for writers like Chau who persevere in order to tell new stories about the neighbors we really don’t know.

If you know of other authors coming to Sonoma County to share great stories, please pass the details on to me, so I can spread the news.
