This was the 2009 top winner from Zone of Focus, the photo contest for high school students from around the country. The contest features an exhibition opening this May in Santa Rosa.

I wrote about the contest earlier this month. Let me now give you the names of this year’s jurors: Michael Schwager, Sonoma State University professor of Art History; Sibylla Herbrich, a photojournalism teacher at San Francisco State University and Santa Rosa Junior College; Luz Elena Castro, a professional photojournalist; and Jennifer Bethke, the education curator at the Sonoma County Museum.

Santa Rosa High photography teacher Tanya Braunstein puts together this juried exhibition, now in its 11th year. The show typically draws several hundred submissions from students around the U.S.

Braunstein, a member of Santa Rosa High’s ArtQuest program, says the contest is open to students from public, private and home school programs. The students compete for cash awards and prizes for black and white photography in both traditional and digital categories.

A selection of the students’ work will be displayed May 7 through June 26 at the Sonoma County Museum in Santa Rosa. The museum will host an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on. Friday, May 6.

Contest entries must be submitted March 28 though April 8. For forms and more information, go to: www.zoneoffocus.org .

(An earlier version of this post incorectly listed the photo as the 2010 winner.)
